About Me:

I am an Associate Professor in Development Politics in the Political Science Department and School of Public Policy at University College London. I am also a Research Associate with the Centre for Social Change at the University of Johannesburg. Prior to joining UCL, I was a Postdoctoral Fellow with the Governance and Local Development (GLD) program at the University of Gothenburg, Sweden (2015-2017); I am currently an Associated Researcher with GLD and a member of the steering committee. I received my PhD in Political Science from the Wilf Family Department of Politics at New York University (NYU) (2015).  I study ethnic, race, development, and African politics with a focus on political participation using experimental and survey methods.

Forthcoming Book with Oxford University Press

In my book, Everyday Identity and Electoral Politics: Race, Ethnicity, and the Bloc Vote in South Africa and Beyond, I explore why some voters choose not to vote with their group when doing so is often perceived to be advantageous given the norms of ethnic favoritism observed across Africa? The book moves beyond the now-dominant instrumental arguments and focuses on expressive drivers of vote choice to explain within-group variation in willingness to vote along group lines. I do so by linking the ethnic identity construction process to vote choice.

Featured Finding

Work with Lauren Honig in Malawi and Zambia suggests that land titling could undermine customary institutions that facilitate cooperative behavior. Our findings suggest that those advocating for land titles should first consider any impacts on local cooperation, which often provide key safety nets in rural communities.
