About Me:

I am a Lecturer (Assistant Professor) in Development Politics in the Political Science Department and School of Public Policy at University College London. Prior to joining UCL, I was a Postdoctoral Fellow with the Governance and Local Development (GLD) program at the University of Gothenburg, Sweden (2015-2017); I am currently an Associated Researcher with GLD. I received my PhD in Political Science from the Wilf Family Department of Politics at New York University (NYU) (2015).  I study ethnic, race, development, and African politics with a focus on political participation using experimental and survey methods.

Ethnic Proximity

I am primarily interested in the role ethnic identities play in predicting within-ethnic group preference variation. My dissertation uses a continuous conceptualization and measurement of ethnicity, ethnic proximity, to predict the political preferences of South Africans in the 2014 National and 2016 Local elections. In addition to this main research agenda, I also study race politics, prejudice/discrimination, ethnic conflict, local governance, and development.

Featured Finding

Work in Malawi with Ellen Lust shows that a greater proportion of the president's co-ethnics in a village is associated with better quality education, BUT this relationship is dependent on the degree to which village norms are ethnicized. Thus, we find that "social institutions" influence the effect of co-ethnicity on education outcomes. Next step: investigate this same relationship with respect to other services.
